Press Release (SKNIS )

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, July 26th 2011 (SKNIS) – It is an opportunity to advance one’s academic and personal development, and represents a good chance for an individual to make a bigger contribution to the land of their birth.

Such an opportunity has come to an outstanding young woman of St. Kitts and Nevis. She is Ms Sonia Boddie, a civil servant employed in the V.A.T. office in the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis. Ms. Boddie, who recently participated in the Caribbean-Canada Emerging Leaders Dialogue, is the recipient of the highly competitive and prestigious British Chevening Scholarship.

Coming to St. Kitts and Nevis to present the award was the 2nd Secretary in the Barbados-based British High Commission, Mr Dan Carruthers. He described Ms Boddie’s application as very strong and impressive, announcing the award at a Press Briefing coordinated by the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service.

“The award is aimed at selecting the ‘cream of the crop,’ the best, most talented individuals from across the world, who are able to apply and impress the selection panel with the strength of their application. We’re really delighted that Sonia has been successful in this process and that she will be going, in just over six week’s time, to study at the University of Birmingham in the UK. She will be studying a Masters degree in Public Administration. Sonia impressed our selection panel with her strong academic record. Her application was very strong, and she had a proven record of success. She articulated her position very well through her personal statement, and we want to wish her all the very best for this scholarship and for her continued success in the future. We hope that she would continue to be a friend of the British High Commission and the British Government.”

In responding to Mr. Carruthers, Ms Boddie said she would study well to assist in building her country and had much appreciation for those who assisted.

“I’ll just like to say that I am very honoured and delighted to have been selected for the British Chevening Scholarship. I would like to thank the Almighty for giving me the wisdom and the intelligence to participate in a competition of such high level. I would like to thank the British Government for affording Caribbean nationals the opportunity to pursue tertiary studies in the United Kingdom. I also want to thank three special persons – my boss, Mr. Edward Gift; Dr. Michael Blake, my English high school teacher; and my parliamentary representative, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, who all gave me guidance and support, as I prepared to compete at such a high level. I would like to thank my mom, who is unable to be here today, family and friends who all have been sources of motivation and inspiration. I will continue making myself proud, my family, and making the people of St. Kitts and Nevis proud.”

Over the past 26 years, 30,000 scholarships have been awarded under the Chevening Programme, to postgraduate students and researchers from countries around the world.
