    Charlestown, Nevis:
Well-wishers joined members of the Nevis Nurses Association on Saturday at a walk that was part of a series of activities planned in the month of October to create awareness about breast cancer.

Averil Walters, the association’s President, said creating awareness was crucial.  “Early detection means you can be cured,” she said in an interview.

She said the focus this year is to facilitate the formation of a self-support group for breast cancer survivors where they can share experiences and knowledge.

Ms. Walters also said she  was encouraged by the response in Nevis of this year’s breast cancer awareness activities, which include a panel discussion on Monday, October 22.

The Minister of Health, Hon. Hensley Daniel, joined the walk’s participants at the park adjacent to Nevis Cultural Centre, Charlestown, where they had breakfast after completing the walk.  Participants started the walk at 5.30 a.m from Gingerland to the Nevis Cultural Centre.

Hon. Daniel thanked the nurses and participants for their commitment to creating breast cancer awareness and urged them to organise activities on quarterly basis to scale up the awareness, “healthy people means a wealthy nation.”

One of the youngest participant who completed the walk was seven-year-old Keneisha, a student at Gingerland Primary School.

In another development, the Nevis Nurses Association, hosted a luncheon at the Alexandra Hospital to raise funds for three nurses who will represent the association on October 26, in St. Croix where celebrations to mark Caribbean Nurses Organisation’s 50th anniversary will be celebrated.
