Summer time...to de beach we ‘haffi’ reach

Reggae Beach
By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ARE you bothered by the hot blazing sun, and have that feeling like you can leave your house half naked due to the heat surrounding your body? Yep! It is summer and that usually means time for the beach for many people.

In a famous song entitled ‘Summer Time’ the artiste states, “It’s summer time, we having a pool party or even de beach we haffi reach.” However, luckily for us in this part of the world we need not rely on a pool, as we have the refreshing waters of the warm Caribbean Sea.

So, to help you beat the heat, SKNVibes has created a ‘Summer Sizzle’ feature that will provide information for you and loved ones, on the beaches with their amenities surrounding our beautiful island.  In this feature we have listed some of the beaches on the outskirts of Basseterre.

First we take a look at the ‘three in one beach’  i.e. three beaches that sit next to each other at the South East Peninsular – Reggae Beach, Cockle Shell Beach and Banana Bay.

Reggae Beach is known as a protected beach because it is surrounded by hills and a small pier. The water is usually calm and does not change from its green colour.  On its sandy shores, one can find Reggae Beach Bar and Restaurant, home of various delicious cuisines.

The chairs available make for a relaxing atmosphere. While there, take a load off by receiving a massage from masseuses at hand. This beach is frequented by tourists and students.

Cockle Shell Beach on the other hand is a long beach and one of the best... and the water is clear and shallow because not far away there are coral reefs.  It is a great picnic spot but if you are in the mood for a nice lunch or dinner, there you can find the Spice Mill Restaurant ready to cook up something fancy.

If that venue does not fit your pocket there is also Lion’s Rock Bar, where you can take pleasure in a cold drink. He has been occupying that venue for the past 12 years and also has a lunch menu.

After enjoying the tranquillity of the beach, you can also engage in the water sports that are available ... and there is also a volleyball net for those who wish to have some more active fun and excitement.

Banana Bay is not a beach that has amenities. However, if you are in the mood to picnic with family and friends this is the ideal spot.

Its many shaded areas make it the perfect relaxation place to take in the refreshing Caribbean breeze.  This beach is also one of the only beaches with spacious parking available just off the beach.

So, there you have it! Three beaches to add to your summer plans! Look out for another set of beaches on the list in the next SKNVibes’ ‘Summer Sizzle’ feature.
