BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A male Basseterre resident, who is alleged to have conned a number of business owners by offering them invalid cheques as payment for goods, was jailed for two years after committing a similar offence.

Wendell Peets, popularly known as ‘Signature’ of Durant Avenue, appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court before Her Worship on Tuesday (July 26) and was found guilty of obtaining credit by false pretence.

According to the facts of the case, Peets, on Friday, February 18, 2011, entered Solomon Sahely Store at the junction of Cayon and New Streets and purchased two door mats, one scrubbing brush, one bottle dishwashing liquid and one bottle Clorox Bleach; all to the value of EC$46.55.

The court was told that Peets offered an EC$175 Credit Union cheque as payment for the items and the proprietress gave him the difference in cash.

She however later found out that the cheque was invalid and had notified the police.

Police apprehended Peets a few days after the report was made and charged him for obtaining credit by false pretence, knowing that the cheque was invalid.

It was revealed in court that Peets is a repeat offender and was convicted for a number of offences, including building breaking and larceny.
