Cable & Wireless launches its Caribbean Foundation
Cable & Wireless has launched its Caribbean Foundation. The Foundation has been created to broaden the reach of the company’s community efforts by pooling the social contributions of the company across the region.
This Foundation will support initiatives in the areas of education, sports, health and culture and offers new ways to support the communities as a complement to the existing core business offerings.
At the launch ceremony held at the Royal St Lucian Hotel in St.Lucia, Chief Operating Officer of Cable & Wireless Caribbean, Len de Barros, said, “Cable & Wireless is committed to continuing to use our knowledge and expertise to benefit community projects that help to narrow the “digital divide,” bringing the world’s best technologies to the Caribbean today!”
He noted that over the past two years Cable & Wireless has invested over US$2m in philanthropic programmes and the formation of the Foundation will serve to reinforce the company’s commitment to the Caribbean.
Mr. de Barros stressed that the company’s goal is to ensure that every dollar spent will help those with greatest need.
The Foundation was launched with the presentation of a cheque and one thousand exercise books to St. Lucia’s Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Education, the Honourable Mario Machel. The money will be used to help persons in need in the community to prepare their children for the September school term. The books will be presented to primary and secondary school students.
In his address Minister Machel applauded the launch of the Foundation and thanked Cable & Wireless for the role it has played and continue to play in the Caribbean. He also noted that the company has always been supportive of the work of the Ministry of Education in his island and saw the Foundation as continuing to provide opportunities for the region’s young people to do well.
This is the first of a series of presentations, to Ministries of Education, which will take place in the other 12 countries in which Cable & Wireless operates.
