ROADTOWN Tortola, BVI, July 29th 2011 - Speaking during a GIS radio report, Acting Assistant Manager of the Solid Waste Department, Ms. Terri Benjamin shared the provisions made by the department to encourage individuals to properly dispose the waste generated during the festival celebrations. – Residents of the Territory have been urged to have a waste wise emancipation festival season, and to properly dispose of their waste in the receptacles provided at the emancipation festival village and along the parade route.

“Litter bins have been strategically placed throughout the festival village for use by patrons. Additionally, metal waste receptacles and two community dumpsters have also been placed in the village for use by vendors,” the Acting Assistant Manager said.

She added, “Litter bins will also be placed along the parade route and patrons and revelers are urged to make use of the receptacles provided.”

Solid waste management tips were also shared during the interview while the importance of properly transporting waste to community dumpsters, and the associated fines under the Litter Abatement Act were reiterated.

“Fines start at $150 for individuals caught littering. Litter Wardens as well as solid waste officers are active and vigilant in the community, so we urge individuals not to drive with bags of garbage tied to the mirror or spare tire of their vehicles. Additionally, persons are urged not to transport garbage on the back of or on the top of their vehicles,” Ms. Benjamin advised.

Individuals are also encouraged to report any illegal dumping or suspected illegal dumpsites. All information will remain confidential as the report is investigated.

The Solid Waste Department of the Ministry of Health and Social Development is responsible for the collection and disposal of community solid waste, as well as the promotion of proper waste disposal practices.
