ROAD TOWN, Tortola, BVI (Saturday, July 30, 2011) - Mr. Holder made the suggestion during his report at the closing of the High Court Assizes on Wednesday July 27, 2011.

It was disclosed that the prisoners are currently taught English and Mathematics and, according to Mr. Holder, “it is a necessity and has become evident that more academic subjects should be added” to those already taught.

Among the subjects that the Superintendent recommended were “BVI” History, Technical Drawing, Art, Music, Calligraphy and Accounting.

He also called on the Ministry of Education to use its resources to help with his recommendation.
There are currently 101 prisoners at the HM Prison of which five are females and three are juveniles.

Meanwhile, Mr. Holder also noted that he has received approval to recruit staff to fill some 26 vacancies and noted that he was seeking creditable persons.

And in an effort to raise staff’s moral, Mr. Holder said he was currently lobbying for better working conditions and a pay hike for his staff.
