Delegates to the 2nd Nevis International Financial Services Industry Conference 2004, being held at the Mount Nevis Hotel.
Charlestown Nevis (August 26, 2004) Premier of Nevis, the Hon Mr. Vance Amory said on Thursday that the financial services sector would have to continue looking at other support systems, as part of the marketing strategies to continue onwards with the enhancement of the jurisdiction.

He was at the time addressing the 2nd Annual International Financial Services Industry Conference being held at the Mount Nevis Hotel.  He noted, “We looked at the other underpinning and support systems, which have to be put in place, and some people will ask, how are we prepared to maneuver through the turbulent times which will attend us.  We are looking at developing with the help of our strategic partners, some strategic plans to continue the enhancement of our reputation and or jurisdiction.”

He pointed out some of the plans to continue the enhancement of the jurisdiction’s reputation.  He explained, “The continued improvement of the legislative framework for the industry; the improvement of the regulatory and enforcement mechanisms; improving the level of service offered by our registered agents and other persons working in the industry; continue to provide training opportunities for locals and to improve our marketing efforts by embarking on more focused initiatives, aimed squarely at attracting quality business and attracting major players”.

In response to the question of how will the industry go forward in terms of making known the changes, the qualitative improvements which we are making in legislation, and products which we offer in Nevis, the Minister of Finance said, “By improving our marketing techniques and determining whether we will go for niches or will go for volume, or we will go for the target markets to ensure that we get the business to create for Nevis an image.”

Dr. Agatha Jeffers-Gooden, Director of the Nevis Financial Services Development and Marketing Department and Mr. Samuel Lohman, President Emeritus of the Offshore Institute, Switzerland, are co-chairpersons of the two-day conference, August 26 to 27.  It is being held under the theme, “Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of our International Financial Service Industry: Reflecting on our past and going forward strong!”

The delegates were persons in the financial services sector, such as registered agents, service providers, trust professionals, bankers, accountants, lawyers, insurance professionals and other interested professionals.

The conference saw a number of local and international speakers on topics such as “The Genesis of the Nevis Offshore Financial Services Sector; A Veteran’s View of the Offshore Industry; Anti-Money Laundering Compliance, Asset Protection and Mandatory Education for Financial Service Industry Practitioners – what’s required and what’s available?”

The conference ends on Friday with an attendance certificate award ceremony and cocktail reception.
