(Basseterre, St. Kitts, 16th October, 2007) – Hundreds of teenagers were chosen from different high schools for the Tourism Work Experience Programme. The programme, which is an activity in the Tourism Awareness Month schedule, gave students a chance to experience what it is like to work in the tourism industry. Students from the Basseterre, Cayon, Washington Archibald and the Verchilds High Schools were selected and sent to different businesses around the island. Some of these businesses included: the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, Frigate Bay Resort, Craft House, St. Kitts Marriott Resort, TDC Ltd, Travel World, Delisle Walwyn, Festivals Secretariat, Kenneth’s Dive Centre, Ocean Terrace Inn, Parks & Beaches Unit and many more.

Fourteen year old Javelle Solomon of the Basseterre High School, was placed in the Corporate Communications Department, St. Kitts Tourism Authority.  Her responsibilities included some administrative work along with visiting a number of her fellow students and interviewing them on camera to gain their feedback on their work

experience.   She was treated to lunch at Stone Walls giving her a chance to interact with an element of the St. Kitts Tourism product. At the end of it all Javelle drafted this press release and had this to say about her assignment at the Department,   “ I felt that this was great because it helps you understand more about tourism and different ways in which you can promote it.  The experience also teaches you how to operate in the working field by keeping occupied and getting work done and being serious.”

Tourism Awareness Month is the annual recognition of the Industry’s role in the development of the island. Activities to come in Tourism Month are; Tourism Market Place (Independence Square) – Friday 19;  National Clean Up Day and Bartenders Competition – Sunday 21.

The St. Kitts Tourism Authority is chiefly responsible for the promotion of the destination in its main markets.
