Basseterre, St. Kitts (September 08, 2004): The terms and conditions of work in the domestic sector is being reviewed by the Labour Department.

Labour Commissioner Clifford Thomas told SKNIS that this initiative falls under the department’s ongoing programme to review the minimum wage for certain sectors of the service industry.

A meeting planned for Sunday, September 12 at the St. Johnson’s Community Centre, La Guerite will address this issue. Mr. Thomas indicated that the meeting, which begins at 5:00 p.m. targets domestic workers, office cleaners. Details on work hours, salary/wages and job duties will be gathered from attendees.

All workers employed in these areas are encouraged to come out. The labour commissioner explained that an attempt is being made to reach out to the Latino community. As such, the notice of the meeting was disseminated in English and Spanish.

"It is very important that everyone attends this session," he said. "There is no organised representation, such as unions, for domestic workers which makes it difficult to bargain with employers. This is where government has a duty to step in and assist vulnerable groups."

Mr. Thomas pointed out that persons may be reluctant to participate for various reasons. He however stressed that all persons will be treated fairly.

Additional information is available at the Labour Department on New Street at telephone 465-2521 ext 1102.
