    CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (NOVEMBER 01, 2007)
-- The fast changing global community was responsible for the Nevis Electricity Company Ltd’s (NEVLEC) move to empower a group of its senior staff to be more productive. Chairman of NEVLEC’s Board of Directors Mr. Ernie Stapleton, made the disclosure on Thursday November 01, 2007, at the start of a two-day workshop on Personal Productivity at the Mount Nevis Hotel.

“In a global community that is impacting the workplace and demands a change in the approaches and techniques in how we do our jobs. The global competitive economy demands competitive companies and competitive companies demand productive staff,” he said.

While he acknowledged qualification, training and skills were important elements in personal productivity Mr. Stapleton said they were not sufficient.

“No matter how much qualification one has, if he or she does not have the right attitude and approach to his or her work, he or she will not optimise his or her personal productivity,” he said.

Mr. Stapleton noted that the work culture on Nevis should be based on planning, creativity, involvement, partnership and team

Notwithstanding, he told the participants that there were several benefits to be derived from the workshop.

“At the end of the two day workshop, you would have developed certain techniques, skills or tools to get things done in a more effective and efficient manner. It has the potential to enhance your quality of life or standard of living in the medium to long term because your productivity impacts the profitability and performance of the company which could consequently lead to rewards and incentives for a productive work force.

“I do not believe that workers should be rewarded just to counter inflation or the cost of living but more so for being productive by adding value to the company’s worth, wealth and health,” he said.

~~Adz:Left~~The Chairman took the opportunity to laud the efforts of the company’s management and Human Resource Officer Ms. Maureen Webbe, for the successful planning and execution of the workshop. He also thanked the Caribbean Electric Utilities Services Corporation (CARILEC) for its partnership with NEVLEC to execute the training programme.

Meantime, NEVLEC’s General Manager Mr. Cartwright Farrell told the participants that their presence at the workshop signalled they were ready to deliver a quality service.

He said the company’s management wanted to see proactive employees who employed good time management, met deadlines and deliver on promises made to customers in a timely manner.

“Our mission states that the Nevis Electricity C0ompany Ltd. aims to be a first class utility company and we can only do that with productive and pro active staff especially at the level present here,” he said.

The General Manager urged the participants to garner all they could from the workshop, since they would be expected to take the lead to engender personal productivity and entrust others in that regard in the organisation. “You will be the trainers who will train the others in this discipline,” he said.
