Elections started today at 9.00 a.m. Wilkin confirmed that there were no irregularities. The students queued peacefully as they waited for their turn to vote. One of the teachers acted as the police man and maintained peace and order.

Returning officers reported no irregularities. When Master Parris was announced winner, there was clapping and jubilation from his supporters.  After the Supervisor of Elections had finished announcing names of elected officials, she asked Parris to give his speech.

“Good afternoon teachers, boys and girls. As the winning President, I will like to thank the following persons first of all God for health, strength, wisdom and courage.  I thank my mother, sister, brother, Earla and most of all my teacher Miss Carey who has been with me all the way and you the children who voted for me.”

“I made some promises to you and I will make sure that they get done to make this school a better place.  Such as keeping the bathroom clean, raise funds by having activities on Friday to buy paint and the last Friday every month you will get hotdog and see a movie.  Once again I thank you,” Parris told the students.

Dr Bronte Gonsalves, a Consultant who has overseen the implementation of the election of student councils in all government primary schools and secondary schools in Nevis said St. John’s Primary School’s election had completed the process.

She described today’s election as “democratic”. She said she had been impressed by the campaign strategies and posters. “The uniqueness about Nevis schools is that they are “doing very well.”

The completion of the election processes for all schools in Nevis will lead to the formation of the National Students Council Association.
