(Los Angeles, USA) - Jani Lane, the former lead singer for American glam rock group Warrant, was found dead late Thursday in a Los Angeles hotel room, said local police.
An autopsy was underway Friday to determine the 47-year-old singer's cause of death, said the Los Angeles Police Department.
Lane, whose real name was John Kennedy Oswald, was found dead at a Comfort Inn in Woodland Hills, an LA neighborhood northwest of the city.
He had been arrested twice in recent years for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The energetic and flamboyant singer was known for his long blonde locks and leather-clad style.
Born in Akron, Ohio, the singer moved to Los Angeles in the 1980s and joined rock group Warrant. He became the band's lead singer and wrote some of their best hits including "Uncle Tom's Cabin," "Down Boys," and the ballad "Heaven."
The group's first two albums, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich" (1989) and "Cherry Pie" (1990) have each sold more than two million copies.
Lane quit Warrant and then rejoined in 2008, only to leave permanently a few months later.
The singer was married three times and wrote on his website that he was "very proud" of his 19-year-old daughter Taylar and that his younger daughter Madison is a "huge Justin Bieber fan."
