BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, NOVEMBER 6TH 2007 (CUOPM) – The issue of youth and crime was addressed on Sunday by St. Kitts and Nevis' Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, who called on parents and the Church to play their central and key roles in moulding the young people in the twin-island Federation.

Speaking at a Church Service to mark the Third Anniversary of the Labour Party’s Third Term in office, Prime Minister Douglas noted that the Federation experiences its share of crime and violence.

He said it is a matter that is receiving priority attention that includes, but not limited to, the strengthening of the Police Force.

“We are saddened by our youth who drift into a life of crime and violence. I call on all social partners to work together; I call on the church as one of those partners to help us find the necessary solutions to these challenging situations which we face today. Let us seriously work to add value to the lives of our young people, helping them to become responsible and productive citizens,” said Prime Minister Douglas.~~Adz:Right~~

“I want to also remind you that parents must play their central and key roles. Let us ensure that our young people mature having strong spiritual values, where the church plays an integral role in the development of the individual and the community in general – bringing community youth residents into Sunday worship,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

“In spite of all our challenges, St. Kitts and Nevis has achieved many things of which we must be thankful. Our future lies in each one of us working diligently to advance our nation, contributing to the whole in a variety of ways. Let us as a people be more tolerant, be more loving and understanding. Let us all endeavour to make St. Kitts and Nevis a better place in which we all can live and to work,” said Dr. Douglas, who is also the National Political Leader of the governing St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party.
