(Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) --- “BASAT is an organization whose main role is the socialization and integration of Barbados Students of the Barbados Student Association of Trinidad and Tobago (BASAT) celebrated their native culture by hosting ‘BASAT Week’ which culminated on Sunday with a church service held at the Curepe Anglican Church.

According to 20 year-old Ms. Amalya Haynes-Gay, Secretary of the Barbados Student Association of Trinidad and Tobago (BASAT) the main goal of the organization is the assimilation of Barbadian students studying in Trinidad.

Students studying in Trinidad not only among Barbadian students but also with students from other Caribbean countries. BASAT week was held from November 6- 12 which started off on Monday.

“On Thursday we held a Culture and Fashion Show in the Undercroft on campus.

There was supposed to be a fete but due to unforeseen circumstances it had to be postponed.

On Sunday the week culminated in a church service which was held at the Curepe Anglican Church where we also participated in items such as Bible readings, prayers and reciting the national pledge”, said Ms. Haynes-Gay during an exclusive interview with SKNVibes.com.

The secretary of the Barbados student association further went on to note the general success of the event and cited it as very profitable due to the response from the general public.

She continued, “It was very successful as we made a profit off the sales and we were also able to display our various cultural activities which were very much enjoyed by the patrons.

I think that BASAT as well as the other country organizations such as Jamaican Student Association of Trinidad and Tobago and the St. Lucia Student Association of Trinidad and Tobago are very important organizations as they make you feel welcome knowing that you are coming from home into a foreign place and being able to meet and interact with people of your own country.”

The BASAT meets the first Sunday of every month at the Student Activity Centre (SAC) which is located on the St. Augustine campus.
