Save our Sons’- mending boys and building men - celebrates

By: Jenise Ferlance, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MENDING boys and building men is what Save Our Sons (SOS) has been doing for troubled boys over the past five years.  With a mission of providing the highest quality of education while implementing values, it has definitely been creating an environment for success.

In celebration of this turquoise milestone, the SOS Home is currently having a week of exciting activities.

The week started with an Anniversary Church Service under the theme: “Purpose in Process”. The service included dance, poems and award presentations.

Monday was dubbed ‘Open Day’ when parents, interested persons and other boys from the community visited the home to interact with the young men residing there and learn about what they do there on a daily basis.

Tuesday was Tag Day, and even though it was a rainy day, that did not stop the young men from going around selling anniversary tags as a means of raising funds.

Yesterday (Aug. 17) was a day of Power Prayer, and it saw many persons from the community joining in prayer with and for the boys of the home.

Today (Aug. 18), the young men are attending Vacation Bible School and next Thursday (Aug. 25), they will be visiting the St. Christopher’s Children Home, a trip that was originally planned for today.

There they will play games, tell stories and just mingle with the children residing there.

Tomorrow (Aug. 19), the boys will be enjoying a night out with a trip to the Caribbean Cinema Movies Theatre.

On Saturday, the boys will be travelling to Nevis for a weekend of fun and frolic.

“The activities have been progressing nicely and the support from the general public has been great,” Clive Saunders, SOS Director explained.

He said that Tag Day, even though rainy, was very successful as response and funds received from the general public was overwhelming.

He also said that the boys are excited about the activities and are eagerly looking forward to the trip they will be making to Nevis this weekend.

Our Sons is a residential treatment home for young men in need. It was established some five years ago, and it is governed by a Board of Directors.

The home was founded with a goal of helping families in difficult circumstances by taking the boys out of their current situation and giving them a new start in a refreshing and stimulating environment where positive values are promoted.

The programme includes academics, therapy, behaviour modification counselling, positive peer culture, recreation, and vocational training.

So far the programme being implemented has been very successful as some of the boys have written and passed their overseas examinations.

One has recently been recruited as a Police Officer and another will be moving on to the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College.

SOS is a non-profit, publicly-supported organization that serves young men and families throughout the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Sponsors over the years include the St. Kitts-Nevis Government, Abundant Life Pentecostal Church, Island Purified Water, LIME, St. Kitts Credit Union, National Caribbean Insurance, SKNA National Bank, Rotary Club of Liamuiga, Dr. Keith Blake and Associates Dental Clinic, Evangelistic Faith Church, Faith Tabernacle Ministries, and New Life Baptist Church in Tortola.
