BASSETERRE St.Kitts August 23rd, 2011 - The Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) has been primarily responsible for collecting and disposing of waste in St Kitts for nearly ten years.
Through a process of education and information, the SWMC has managed to change citizens’ attitudes towards the management of waste using their motto “Pride, Responsibility, Ownership”.
Nevertheless, there are still some small pockets of society that have not completely bought into the ideas that the SWMC has been trying to promote.
In light of the foregoing, the SWMC has embarked on a re-branding exercise in order to place the SWMC and its principles firmly in the minds of the citizens of St Kitts. In so doing, SWMC believes that they will receive the total co-operation of the general public with respect to waste management.
As a first step towards re-branding, the SWMC has adopted a mascot that will provide a face and personality for the corporation. In choosing the mascot, it was agreed that the character should be uniquely Kittitian and should convey a warm, friendly feeling to citizens whenever they thought of Solid Waste.
As such, SWMC has chosen the Vervet (Green) Monkey as its mascot – not one of the evil creatures that wreak havoc on our plant crops, but a cute, cuddly, intelligent and articulate animal that would represent SWMC well.
In order to allow the general public to get involved, the SWMC now takes this opportunity to invite all Kittitians to participate in the “Name the Solid Waste Monkey” Competition. The name should be a cute, catchy one that would be appropriate for this character.
