“You have to go!” – Traffic Dept. to Vendors

The area from which the vendors were asked to vacate

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – VENDORS who operated opposite Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) on the Bay Road wasted no time in packing up and moving on as soon as they received a notice issued by the Traffic Department to cease all operations in that area.

The notice, which was issued yesterday (Aug. 23) stated, “Vendors who occupy the sidewalk along the Bay Road opposite KFC are asked to remove all vending furniture and equipment from the sidewalk and cease all operations in the area by Monday 29th August 2011.”

SKNVibes contacted Head of the Traffic Department, Inspector Cromwell Henry, who explained that the vendors were asked to move their operations due to the ongoing construction of a building, which signs indicate will be a new Chinese supermarket.

He also stated that the sidewalk upon which the vendors had set up shop would be repaired.

He said that even though this directive appears to be of short notice, it is not, as the vendors were aware that they would have had to cease operations in that area months ago.

He said that the vendors were given notice to relocate since December of last year (2010).

He then explained that the vendors appealed for more time so as to take advantage of the carnival season, hence they were granted the extra time by the Traffic Department with the understanding that they would relocate in the new year.

After construction is completed, vendors who wish to continue operations in that area may do so after seeking permission from the appropriate Minister, Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas.
