Commissioner-designate assured no political interference

Incoming Commissioner of Police Celvin Geron ‘CG’ Walwyn

Petty rumoured to be new Force Personnel Officer

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - CELVIN GERON ‘CG’ WALWYN, the man designated to replace Austin Williams as Commissioner of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, indicated that there would be no political interference when he assumes office.

Walwyn made this pronouncement, among others, during his presentation yesterday (Aug. 23) at the opening ceremony of the two-day Youth Issues and Crime Empowerment Symposium organised by Operation Future in collaboration with the Canada-based Regina Anti-Gang Services (RAGS) held at the International University of Nursing in St. Kitts.

“I am no nonsense. I say exactly what I feel and I feel and I will let the chips fall where they may. In other words, I tell the truth and I need to clear something up now while I am here.

“There is no political interference from the Ministry of National Security with me, and there is none from the Prime Minister. That was established before I took the job and I was told that I have the right to do whatever I see fit to make St. Kitts and Nevis a safer place,” Walwyn said.

The 25-year law enforcement veteran declared that he was in the past vested with the appointment of a chief of police and knows what politics is all about.

He explained that in 2000 he had ran for Sheriff in Texas “so I know what it is to be a politician”.

Walwyn declared that he is aware of many things published by the local media about the Ministry of National Security, and indicated that it is one of the best places with which he has had dealings.

In recent months, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and a number of political and social activists had been calling for the removal of the Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of national Security from that post.

Walwyn however disagrees with their call and noted that the nation should be proud of her being in that position.

“I have had a very good relationship with the Permanent Secretary. The people of St. Kitts need to know that this lady is very well versed. You should be proud to have her in that position.”

He informed that when it comes to gangs he is no nonsense and he has no problem doing his job because he does not owe anything to anybody in the twin-island Federation.

“So, if they want to fire me, as I read in the paper, they are free to do so. But when you fire me, it’s not because I am not doing my job…it’s because I am. I do not take any crap from anybody. Just because I haven’t been here for a little while, like the newspaper said, does not mean you are going to come and tell me how to do my job.

“I was hired because I know what I am doing. I will take your suggestions, I will listen to you, but I will make the final decision at the end of the day,” he added.

Celvin Geron ‘CG’ Walwyn is scheduled to take office as the Federation’s new Commissioner of Police on Thursday, September 1, 2011.

Meanwhile, after some months without a functioning Force Personnel Officer, informed sources told SKNVibes that the Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Education, Osmond Petty, would be filling that position.
