Local Martial Arts team to head to Trinidad for competition

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A Martial arts trio from a local group called The Apocalypse Mixed Martial Arts Club (AMMA) is gearing up to travel to Trinidad, for the first Caribbean  Amateur Fighting Championships (CAFC) being held from October 14 to 16 at the Southern Regional Indoor Sports Arena.

The three elite members of the club who will be taking part in the event to represent the Federation are Livine Stevens, Alex Lewis and Tija Stanley.

According to the travelling members, they received an invitation to a Martial Arts tournament being held in Trinidad in 2009 but they were unable to attend.

However, they recently received another invitation and decided to take up the challenge, as they viewed it as a great opportunity to represent their Federation.

The competition is being organised by the Caribbean Kickboxing Grappling Sanshou Federation (CKGSF) and will feature participants from various islands around the Caribbean and the United States.

They will all battle for a chance to take home the belt, a gold medal and most importantly earn a fight contract to become a pro-athlete.

The members of the Martial Arts group AMMA, said the Club started in 2004 with members who have been practicing for over 20 years.

Lewis also indicated that the club has seen a multitude of practitioners and visitors from across the world that are keen on learning and sharing anything related to Martial Arts. He said they practice many different styles that included Boxing, Judo, Submission Wrestling/Grappling, Aikido, Jujitsu and Muay Thai/Kickboxing.

Although the sport is not one which is fully recognized in the Federation, the members are hoping to change that.  They view Martial Arts as a good fitness tool and one that is also great for discipline.

Team Apocalypse will be responsible for their airfare and boarding expenses as well as entry fees into the competition for each of them. They are therefore seeking sponsors and the public‘s assistance in helping them get to the competition.

Lewis stated they would like to extend invitations to persons for consideration to  become a sponsor to their championship cause.  He noted that any measure of support would be greatly appreciated.

“It is our hope that the people of St. Kitts and Nevis can be as proud of our achievements in Martial Arts and the Combat Sports, as they are of other sports ambassadors in Track and Field and Football amongst others,” Lewis added.
