BASSETERRE, St. Kitts –THE East Basseterre [Newtown] Community Festival, which has been dormant for several years, has been revived and is scheduled to take place from September 10 to 19.
One of the highlights on the calendar of events of the revived community festival is a dynamic pageant and calypso show that will top off the celebration.
On September 17, the Miss East Pearl Cultural Pageant will engage five intelligent beauties in five segments; four of which will be judged at the Newtown Playfield being dubbed the Fish Pot Village for the festival.
The contestants are Shandor Wilkinson 20, Dolena Boyd 18, Jascur Hobson 19, Tivana Richards 19 and Nordia Demming 19.
The five vivacious beauties will first take the stage in Fanfare, which would be followed by Promotional Speech, where they would be given two minutes to speak about an individual, event or object in the community.
The Talent segment will then follow along with the Community Cultural Dress segment in which the contestants will use their creative minds to design an outfit symbolic to the community.
The pageant will then be topped off with the Evening Wear segment followed by the crowning of the 2011 queen after a seven-year hiatus.
According to Festival Coordinator Jeffery Hanley, the aim of the pageant is to develop the young ladies while at the same time promote unity and oneness within the community.
Hanley said the night would also feature a Calypso Show where five participants would compete for the crown.
Some of the other scheduled activities are a Fun Day, Church Service, J’Ouvert, DJ Clash, Aquatic Sports, Steel Pan Festival, Peace Concert and Parade Day to climax the festive event.
