Town Houses Vandalized in Village Area

    By Suelika N. Buchanan

~~Adz:Left~~ (Basseterre; St. Kitts): Some of the town houses built in the St. Johnson’s Village by the Labour Government have apparently been vandalized. The vandals have broken windows in apartments of all three blocks of the compound.

Wayland Vaughan, General Manager of the National Housing Corporation (NHC), in an interview with SKNVibes.com, confirmed revealed that this was not the first time that the homes have been vandalized.

“Some unknown person or persons keep vandalizing the buildings by throwing stones and bottles and other missiles at the windows,” he said.

“Now this time they have entered the building and tried to remove a transformer from one of the homes but failed to do so because we have them bolted down,” he added.

“What we will do now is that since the homes are 99.5 per cent finish we will try and complete them as soon as possible so that people can start living in them as we believe people living in them will help the situation,” Vaughan said.

“However, we have spoken to the Defence Force about providing some security around the area, for the time being,” the NHC Manager disclosed.

Minister of National Security and Constituency Representative for the area, Hon. Dwyer Astaphan, spoke out against the recent acts of vandalism.

He noted that a number of persons opposed the Government’s plan to build the town houses in that area and he was of the opinion that the vandal or vandals were operating under directives from such persons.

He further implored the people of the area to be more vigilant of Government property and to cherish project homes as they were built for their benefit.

The town houses were built in 2005, but encountered construction and design problems with the building that basically slowed down construction progress.

The town houses are situated south of PAM Headquarters near the Patsy Allers Playing Field.

A police officer from the Criminal Investigation Department said that they are presently investigating the matter.
