    Nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis in Leeds and Birmingham get update on progress

    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, NOVEMBER 27TH 2007 (CUOPM)
    – Nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis residing in Birmingham and Leeds, England are getting an update on the progress, challenges
    and future for the twin-island Federation.
     
    Minister of Housing, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Cedric Liburd on his way home from the 34th Session of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Rome, addressed nationals living in Birmingham last Sunday night.
     
    Issues raised included the progress made in St. Kitts and Nevis in furthering the diversification of the national economy since the closure of the sugar industry.
     
    Minister Liburd also provided information on the special land initiative, the increase in cruise ships arrival for 2007/2008 Season, the direct flights from Miami and New York on American Airlines and from North Carolina on US Airways, as well as the availability of direct flights from London Gatwick by Excel Airways.
     
    Electoral Reform, the position of St. Kitts and Nevis on the United Nations High Human Development Index, opportunities available to returning nationals, the housing programmes and people empowerment were also discussed.

    Nationals were please with the progress taking place in St. Kitts and Nevis and were very happy that the governing St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Administration of Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas will continue to give them the right to vote in their homeland.
     
    Minister Liburd also expounded on the progress in the hotel industry with the construction of the St. Kitts Marriott Resort and Royal Beach Casino at Frigate Bay, and the introduction of high-end hotels as part of the Federation’s tourism marketing strategy were also mentioned.
     
    The Birmingham meeting was coordinated and chaired by Mr. Joseph Norford of Sugar Sweet Partnership and the St. Kitts and Nevis High Commission in London.
     
    The meeting was also attended by Deputy High Commissioner and former Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Mrs. Jacinth Henry-Martin, who addressed nationals.
     
    ~~Adz:Left~~Minister Liburd and Deputy High Commissioner Henry-Martin will meet with nationals in Leeds on Wednesday night at the West Indian Centre at seven ‘o’ clock.
