ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, September 1st, 2011 -  Speaking exclusively to Virgin Islands News Online, the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) At Large candidate said she has always been doing what was taught to her as a child – to work hard and to be selfless and her impact has been felt in many sectors even though she has not been craving for attention and rewards.

She noted that most people would remember her as Chairperson of the drag racing committee but it digs a lot deeper than that. “I have been instrumental in facilitating the first banking programme in the territory. It initially started with MWM Savings and then you saw other corporate giants deciding and I guess they wanted to make a contribution and they continued the banking programme in some of the other public schools.”

McMillan also said she has been playing a part in the housing programme, which she hopes would come on stream soon. “I have been touching base with the Minister of Natural Resources and Labour to see how we can bring this to fruition. I went so far as having talks with individuals who I thought would be able to add to understanding how we can get this foundation started. I went so far to have a conversation with the head of the banking association Ms. Joyce Muraine.”

She said in addition to that, she has also been involved in the Adopt-A-School project initiated under the Ministry of Education and Culture. “I was part of the initial committee and we understood what the bigger picture was and what we wanted to ensure was that as we continue to empower local businesses in particular that they would give back to the community and in particular giving back to the schools.”

The Power School initiative is also a programme that McMillan has been pushing from behind the scenes.
McMillan said too that she has been working along with the Ministry of Education and Culture to create an entertainment industry that would help to boost the tourism product and one of the initiatives is to have a performing arts centre at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC).

She said in tourism there must be sellers of the product and the centre would help to achieve that and also give the youths an understanding of the value of the tourism product and what it is to have national pride. The young entrepreneur noted that even out of office she has been very accessible and persons have even called her for help with various matters including at one time to help discourage a possible prison riot.

“And I was able to get some of the other members so that we could go to the prison and basically deter a situation that could have really gotten out of control. So I have been all over the place but the bottom line is that a lot has been done So I think even in my four years being not elected but still out there representing the people could you imagine if I got in (office)?”

Commenting on why she chose to run for office again, McMillan said she believes she has a valuable role to play in the development of the Virgin Islands and also that there are many persons who believe in her and encourage her to continue her political ambitions.

“In 2007, understanding the climate at the time, I thought that I would be best suited to serve being one of the decision makers and being one of the voices for the voiceless. I continue to push that I can value add to our existing framework and the government of the day to ensure that the needs of the people and the BVI are addressed.”

She believes too that her chances for getting elected would be better this time around and put her in even a better position to push her agenda.

“I continue to be the lady of hope. I continue to be the voice for the voiceless and I continue to be a catalyst for the youths, for boosting the treasury, for ensuring that our education system goes from good to great and that would continue to ensure that the manner that we progress and develop as a country, even taking for the cost of living, would continue to be addressed.”
