KITTS, SEPTEMBER 30TH 2004 (CUOPM) – The commencement of works for the re-development of Warner Park to facilitate the hosting of World Cup Cricket in 2007, will bring a new dimension of tangibility to the process and would help spur the creative minds of the people of the Federation.
So says St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas at the groundbreaking ceremony for construction of the US$6 million facility, financed by the Republic of China on Taiwan on Thursday morning.
Dr. Douglas told a large gathering of officials including the Governor General His Excellency Dr. Sir Cuthbert Sebastian, West Indies Cricket Board and local cricket officials that the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, must take advantage of the enormous commercial opportunities that World Cup Cricket would bring to this country.
He said the Governments and people of the Caribbean are of one accord and have the intention and specific commitment focused upon the execution of an experience that is first class, filled with true Caribbean flavours and augmented by the most modern of conveniences and comfort for players and spectators and visitors alike.
“When our visitors would have departed our shores we would wish for them to take with them the wonderful memories of the Caribbean and the desire to recapture the essence of their experiences by returning some time later as our hotel rooms would be there waiting,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who noted: “one cannot begin to measure the tremendous benefit that would arise through the exposure to the potential billions of television viewers around the world.”
“Like never before, the Caribbean will be on stage, and we must deliver higher than the expectations, even with our limitations in our resources,” said Dr. Douglas, who said the prestigious World Cup, “promises to have long-term benefits, particularly in the attraction of international business and enhanced tourism.”
He said the people of St. Kitts and Nevis must place themselves in a position to take advantage of this sporting spectacle.
Prime Minister Douglas said the experience of hosting World Cup 2007 in St. Kitts and the Caribbean “would result in new levels of competencies, new economic enhancement, and the creation of a new platform for commercial sporting ventures.”
The breaking of the ground was done jointly by Prime Minister Douglas and Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Hon. Jacinth Henry-Martin and the Republic of China on Taiwan Resident Ambassador to St. Kitts and Nevis, Her Excellency Mrs. Marietta Liau and Mr. Val Kempadoo of Terra Forma.
