Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, September 5th, 2011  – The Elections Office is preparing for the next general election, which is constitutionally due in the Territory no later than November 2011 and is encouraging persons who are not already registered to vote to ensure that they are registered.

Speaking to the Department of Information and Public Relations the Supervisor of Elections Ms. Juliette Penn explained, “Although continuous voter registration remain ongoing, with the passage of the Elections (Amendments) Act No. 14 of 2011 once the House of Assembly has been dissolved persons will only have two days to register to be eligible to vote in the upcoming general election.

”Ms. Penn added, “It is important for persons to register early for the simple reason of not being disenfranchised. Registering early will ensure that if any problems are found with applications, for example the wrong documentation was submitted, we would have enough time to contact those individuals and have them submit the correct documents to complete the registration process.

In order to be eligible to vote in the Territory persons must be a Belonger, 18 years of age or older, and domiciled in the Virgin Islands or the United States Virgin Islands. The requirements to register are a birth certificate, Virgin Islands Passport or a Belonger Card. A naturalisation certificate can also be used once the certificate is dated before June 15, 2007.

The Elections Office is located at No. 6 Russell Hill Road, in the Ulric Dawson Building and is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Residents of Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke may collect voter registration forms from the post offices on those islands and return them to the Election Office. Residents of St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands may collect voter registration forms from Smith’s Ferry Service ticket counter in Charlotte Amalie.
