Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola, BVI  September 6th, 2011 - According to the Premier, he has advised the Governor, Boyd McCleary “to issue the proclamation order to dissolve the House of Assembly on Tuesday September 13, in preparations for the general election”.

Though he did not announce a date for the 2011 General Elections, a source close to the Premier told Virgin Islands News Online that the elections could be in late October 2011.

The Premier’s announcement gave way for the General Elections, and a Nomination date. Thus far, there is a long list of independent candidates contesting the general elections and the list is expected to significantly increase by Nomination Day.

There has been much controversy surrounding the eligibility of three candidates from the opposition National Democratic Party, Myron V. Walwyn, Archibald Christian and Claude Skelton-Cline, to run for office under the new Constitution of 2007.

The House of Assembly sitting will begin at 10 a.m. today and is expected to be the second to last sitting.
Virgin Islands News Online legal desk has confirmed that at least two, Walwyn and Christian, can run. No research by this news agency has been done on Claude Skelton-Cline.

A group is currently raising funds to mount a legal challenge after Nomination Day against the three so the courts can interpret the Constitution.

Meanwhile, there are five political parties contesting the upcoming elections. They are the ruling Virgin Islands Party of Ralph T. O’Neal OBE, the People’s Patriotic Alliance -leader unknown, however, Shaina Smith coordinates the group’s activities; the United Party of Conrad Maduro; the People’s Party of L. Allen Wheatley and the Opposition National Democratic Party of Dr. D. Orlando Smith.
