ROADTOWN TortolaBVI,September 7th, 2011 - It will be a collaborative effort between her Ministry and the Attorney General Office. She was at the time touching on the legal aspect of the Domestic Violence Bill 2011, which was passed with amendments around 8:15 p.m. last evening.

“Mr. Speaker I will not be part of any law that will create a situation where people cannot access the courts. Part of the active work the Ministry of Health has done is to widen the public sector to provide legal assistance.

We are at an advance stage of having a Public Defender’s Office because it is not right that there are so many people in our country that have the difficulty in obtaining legal assistance,” Minister Penn told the House.

She emphasised that “Our society cannot prosper, it cannot be safe, and it cannot develop in the proper way if we do not have proper access to justice and court”.

Virgin Islands News Online was informed that lawyer’s bill can go as up to $10,000, which is for a murder case. For legal aid the defendant has to pay between $500 and $700 where a law firm will be assigned the case.
