Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, September 7th 2011 - Eighteen years ago on September 1st, The St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA) was established as a statutory body to provide air and sea port services in St. Kitts. Since then, SCASPA has made significant contributions to the social and economic development of the island. At eighteen years, the Authority is proud of its contributions and the significant milestone it has reached, and has planned a month of celebratory activities under the theme “Pursuing Excellence, Celebrating Our Achievements.”

The 18th Anniversary Celebration commenced on Thursday 1st, 2011 with unveiling of signage ceremonies. Two signs were unveiled on that day, one at the roundabout of the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport and the other of the entrance at the Sea Port. Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Hon Richard Skerritt, unveiled the sign at the airport and Chairman of SCASPA, Mr. Linkon Maynard, unveiled the sign at the entrance of the Sea Port. Participants at the ceremonies included Advisor to the Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Mr. Cedric Liburd, Officer in Charge of SCASPA and Head of Corporate Affairs and Public Relations, Mrs. Delcia Bradley-King, Police Commissioner Mr. Celvin E. Walwyn of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, stakeholders, management and staff of SCASPA.

The SCASPA staff continued the Anniversary Celebration on Sunday 4th September, 2011 when over 50 members worshipped at the Wesley Methodist Church. Staff members sang, “Shine, Jesus, Shine” while Head of Corporate Affairs and Public Relations and Officer in Charge, Mrs. Delcia Bradley-King, delivered a speech about SCASPA’s initiatives aimed at  enhancing the quality of customer service, and the community projects in which SCASPA was involved. Administrative Assistant, Ms. Linda Fyfield, and Air Traffic Control Officer, Mr. Don Grant, read the scripture.

The 18th Anniversary affords SCASPA an opportunity to express appreciation to its present and past workers. An Awards Dinner honouring and recognizing past Chairmen and General Managers, the present Chairman and employees of SCASPA will be held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort and Royal Beach Casino on Saturday, September 10th. The ceremony will celebrate the employees of SCASPA for they have demonstrated a strong sense of commitment to SCASPA’s objectives; they have sacrificed and dedicatedly worked hard to bring the organization reasonable success.

Not only will SCASPA give back to its employees but it will also give back to the community. SCASPA recognizes its responsibility to contribute to the development and common good of the community. As a result, several projects have been undertaken in collaboration with volunteer groups. The New Town playing field has been upgraded, bus stops are being constructed in Sandy Point and Saddlers, and the kitchen of the Saddler’s Primary School has been repaired and a sick bay will be created.  The community-based groups, Sandy Pointers Inspiring Real Improvement Throughout (SPIRIT), Pasture Roots football team, and Saving Our Youth At Risk (SOYAR) have partnered with SCASPA to complete these projects.

Staff will continue the 18th Anniversary celebration on Friday 16th September in a health walk and breakfast, and on Sunday 25th September, on a boat ride to Nevis. Additionally, several of SCASPA’s senior and middle managers will visit all the government primary schools, making brief remarks and offering the schools monetary contributions on Thursday 29th September. The month long celebration will end with a concert behind the National Museum at Port Zante from 1:00 pm. to 7:00 pm. The free concert will feature Infamus, Nicha B, the Cayon High School Steel Orchestra among other popular performers.

The 18th Anniversary celebration is expected to raise SCASPA’s profile in the community.  Internally, it will increase staff morale and strengthen commitment to building a culture of excellence.  SCASPA aims to raise efficiency to the highest levels and exceed customer expectations, transforming into the top port authority in the region.
