    (Basseterre, St. Kitts):
The Special Education unit is currently hosting a week of activities in order to raise funds to repay a loan of forty thousand dollars which they borrowed in order to travel to China to compete in the “2007 Special Olympics World Games”.

Sixteen persons, including 10 athletes, travelled to China for the Games, which were held from October 2nd-11th. The St. Kitts and Nevis athletes participated in three disciplines- athletics, swimming and bocce- and came home with fifteen medals, five gold, five silver and five bronze.

The week of activities commenced on Sunday with the Special Education students, along with parents, teachers and the Hon. Sam Condor, going to church at the Anglican Church.

On Monday lectures were held in the primary schools by friends and supporters of the Special Education Unit about the Special Olympics.

Tuesday is “Appreciation Day”  while on Wednesday the Special Ed. Unit will be having a concert at the Dr. William Connor School to showcase the talents of the athletes.

The 2007 world games will be shown on ZIZ television on Thursday, December 13th, and to conclude the week of activities Friday will be known as tag day and tags would be on sale; there will also be a march at 9 a.m. from the Special Education unit down to the Independence Square.

According to Clarice Cotton, an education officer and also the National Director of Special Olympics, they are hoping to raise the funds from their tag day and the concert on Wednesday.

She also mentioned that there will be the handing over of a cheque from “The Cable” which always makes an annual donation.  She said they also wrote to other businesses soliciting financial assistance.
