~~Adz:Left~~Charlestown, Nevis. December 11, 2007. Magistrate Yasmine Clarke told members of gangs in Nevis that she will not tolerate gang related incidents.

The Magistrate provided the warning as she firmly spoke to Menelek Tyson, who was in court to answer to three charges- throwing missiles, being in possession of a dangerous weapon and wounding with intent. All three charges stemmed from an incident on November 30th, in Charlestown.

Magistrate Clarke also revoked Tyson’s bail and remanded him at Her Majesty’s Prison until next week when he will be sentenced.

The particulars of the case are that Constable Leon Lake was patrolling in Charlestown, on November 30th, when he saw Tyson with a cutlass. Lake drew his pistol and pointed it to Tyson and told him to drop the cutlass. Tyson complied with the order and dropped the cutlass. He was arrested and taken to custody.

Prior to his arrest, Tyson was also throwing stones after some Charlestwon Secondary School students. One stone allegedly hit a female student who had to be treated.

Tyson, who was not represented, was asked to respond to the Prosecutor’s account of the incident.

He said he was liming in town when he was attacked and had to defend himself.

“I know I did not act properly,” he told the Court.

The Magistrate noted that like many other persons she had to divert because of the fracas involving Tyson on November 30th.

“I had to stop my car as I reached the supermarket. I did not know what was happening. I had to park at Slack’s Supermarket when I saw you with a cutlass. I saw you! I am going to send all of you to jail! Anything I can do to reduce crime in Nevis I will do,” Magistrate Clarke stated emphatically.
