Basseterre, St. KItts: Fuel surcharge will be capped at 50% of the primary charge for electricity from January 2008. This translates into some welcomed tax relief to residents of the island.
The confirmation came from Prime Minister of the Federation, Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas, during his 2008 Budget Address, on Tuesday 11th December.
The announcement during the Budget Address was a direct response to a promise made several days earlier, at the launch of the Petro Caribe Agreement, to bring some relief to those who pay electricity bills.
“I am pleased to announce yet another initiative aimed at assisting our people to cope with the rising price of fuel.
Specifically, in respect of electricity bills of householders for consumption of electricity in the month of January 2008 and thereafter, the fuel surcharge would be capped at 50% of the primary charge for electricity.
This cap, which would be reviewed periodically, would help to ease the burden of electricity charges on many household consumers who are sometimes called upon to pay fuel surcharges as much as 100% of the primary electricity charge,” the Prime Minister stated.. ~~Adz:Left~~
At this same forum Dr Denzil Douglas called on all householders to remain vigilant in energy conservation practices.
A fuel surcharge was added to the electricity bill because of the constant increases in oil and petroleum products.
