(Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) --- While the Atlantic hurricane season officially ended on November 30th, Tropical Storm Olga took the lives of approximately 25 people, with especially disastrous effects in the Dominican Republic, where 11persons perished.

Reportedly, as the storm moved to the Dominican Republic, Authorities were forced to evacuate families from low lying areas. Thousands were forced to flee their homes and a large number of persons are reportedly missing after the storm developed on Tuesday and weakened into a tropical depression.

According to the BBC Weather Centre 45 mph winds were accompanied by torrential rainfall as Olga hit Puerto Rico and it knocked out power throughout the island and caused mass flooding.

Reports from the BBC Weather Center also indicated that December storms are rare due to the tendency of tropical storms to draw strength from warm seas.  Remarkably, Olga is the 10th to have developed in December since records were created in 1851 and it brings the total number of named storms for the 2007 hurricane season to 15.
