Press Release

ROADTOWN TortolaBVI, September, 14th, 2011 -- Mr. deCastro is also against the United States Virgin Islands referring to itself as the Virgin Islands and believes it is a case of identity theft.

The outspoken deCastro even went as far as protesting in 2009 before Friendship Day activities at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park, where USVI Governor, John P. DeJongh Jr. and his delegation were visiting at the time. He had turned up with a placard that said ‘stop using our name’.

Four years after, Mr. deCastro does not think all his troubles were in vain and told Virgin Islands News Online that a lot of progress has been made especially with VIslanders getting in the habit of recognising their Territory as the Virgin Islands.

He noted that a lot of government departments have been using the constitutional name and gave credit to government for its efforts. However, Mr. deCastro said that the National Democratic Party (NDP) “didn’t care” about the issue while in power.

Back in 2009, Mr deCastro had said “so many Virgin Islanders and other residents refused to call our country by its Constitutional name and allow another Territory to use our name. In the United States when one individual uses another’s identity it is called Identity Theft and is a Criminal Offense”.

Meanwhile, Governor DeJongh during his Friendship Day address in 2009 had said that the two islands would be much more effective if they were to see themselves as the Virgin Islands rather than the BVI and USVI.
