Basseterre, St. Kitts October 13, 2004): As the October 15 date set for Nomination Day draws near, young people in St. Kitts are increasingly committed to exercising their franchise in the October 25 general election.

SKNIS took to the streets and found that most persons interviewed are anxious to go to the polls.

A 22-year-old young man named Ashaam said it was his constitutional right to vote and he was proud to be contributing to the process. This sentiment was shared by 20-year-old Jervin who explained that everyone has a part to play in electing a government. He added that this is the first time he will be able to vote and is looking forward to it.

Meanwhile Angela, 27, said voting is important. "We as citizens have a duty to elect the best candidates to govern our country," she noted, adding that "our future is at stake."

When asked about encouraging other young people to vote - Andrine, 25, explained it is a part of personal development.

"They always say that youths are the future leaders of the country and we need to start to participate in designing the destiny of our country," she stressed.

Jessica, 23, disclosed that she was actively campaigning to get colleagues to vote. "Persons I’ve spoken to listen," she said. "Some of them agree with the things I say, others say that they have no reason to vote but I am still working on them because I feel that everyone who is able to vote should."

Elections and the electoral process will be discussed on the October 16 edition of the popular youth radio show Elements of Surprise. An official indicated that the subject will address various areas and aims to educate the electorate on the rules and regulations of voting.

"This subject also targets young adults who may be going to the polls for the first time and this review will significantly help to provide useful information on voting procedures," he revealed.

Elements of Surprise airs every Saturday on ZIZ Radio at 10:00 a.m.
