Nevis Island Administration
Education To Receive in Excess of 13% of the Budget

Premier of Nevis, Hon Joseph Parry

    (CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS)

One of the top priorities of the NIA in the area of education is the establishment of a community college that will offer training in the technical areas, including hotel trades.

“We have already requested assistance with this project from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and a pre-feasibility study was undertaken with financial assistance from the bank to determine the needs of the island,” indicated Premier Parry.

The NRP works diligently to empower all Nevisians with education/training; and with this in mind a community college will ensure that the young people of Nevis are equipped with marketable skills for the workplace.

The Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) led Administration continues to demonstrate their commitment to Education by establishing libraries, internet facilities in schools and the communities and upgrading the scales for trained teachers, including those in the special education programmes.

The efforts in education are paying dividends with the recent results that Nevisian students have received in the overseas examinations. In his budget address, Mr. Parry congratulated all the students who performed exceptionally with a special emphasis on State Scholar, Ms. Monique Liburd.

“I must congratulate the teachers, parents and students for the outstanding CAPE results, and the excellent CSEC results at both secondary schools. However, we cannot rest on our laurels. There is still a lot of work to be done,' said the Premier.

Premier Parry also discussed the issue of boys in Nevis who have not been measuring up to the girls in education. He feels that boys are under-performing and are seeking alternatives by engaging in criminal activities.

Mr. Parry and his Cabinet have realised that not everyone is academically inclined; and alternative education in the way of technical training is presently being looked at by the Administration. ~~Adz:Right~~
