BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE East Basseterre (Newtown) Festival committee, which is hosting the Miss East Pearl Cultural Pageant and Calypso Show this Saturday (Sep. 17) as part of their celebrations has made the decision to postpone the event until September 30.

According to Festival Coordinator Jeffery Hanley, they decided to postpone the event mainly because of sponsorship issues.

He said they are hosting the festival events without any money and therefore apart  from the passing of the storm over the weekend, some of the events had to be canceled.

The contestants for the pageant are Shandor Wilkinson 20, Dolena Boyd 18, Jascur Hobson 19, Tivana Richards 19 and Nordia Demming 19.

They will all compete in giving a Promotional Speech, when they would be allotted two minutes to speak about an individual, event or object in the community.

The Talent segment will then follow along with the Community Cultural Dress segment in which the contestants will use their creative minds to design an outfit symbolic of the community and the final appearance will then be topped off with Evening Wear.

On the calypso side of it, five calypsonians will compete for the crown.

In an earlier interview Hanley indicated that the aim of the pageant is to develop the young ladies while at the same time promote unity and oneness within the community.

The plans were afoot to revive the East Basseterre Community Festival after a seven year hiatus which occurred after a young man had lost his life during one of the street activities, when he was pinned under the wheel of a vehicle that was used to transport the sound equipment for one of the bands.

Some of the other activities that were planned for the festival would still commence this weekend including the Jouvert and street parade.
