~~Adz:Left~~ Basseterre, St. Kitts: A fire official is reminding the public to refrain from leaving children at home, unattended, as this would increase the risks of fire incidents and other ‘dreadful mishaps”.

The reminder was issued following this year’s first recorded fire, which occurred at Prickle Pear Alley, on Wednesday evening.

According to sources, two children were left in the home unattended and were allegedly using candles to provide light when the incident occurred.  The blaze however, was confined to a bedroom in the back of the house and the Fire and Rescue Response Unit was able to quickly extinguish the flames.  While property was damaged, the children were reportedly unharmed.

Everette O’Garro, Fire Station Officer (FSO “st”), stationed at the Basseterre Fire and Rescue Department, explained that by adhering to simple guidelines, certain incidents can be avoided.

“We simply want to advise parents not to leave under-aged kids at home unattended because we see what it can lead to.  It is also important that they have not access to any type of ignition sources such as lighters or matches.  These things must always be kept out of reach of children.  Just by doing some simple and basic guidelines and precautions, we would be able to avoid some of these dreadful incidents,” he noted.

Persons are also reminded that it is a criminal offence to leave children under the age of 16 years, unattended.
