COP: Don’t ask me for favours, I work by the book

Commissioner of Police Walwyn

COP: Don’t ask me for favours, I work by the book

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – JUST in case you were contemplating approaching the new Commissioner of Police Celvin CG Walwyn to see if, just maybe, he would do you a “favour” and “bend the rules a bit”… DON’T!

Because as he puts it, “That horse don’t run!”

Son of the soil and an officer of the law for 25 years, Walwyn was, just weeks ago, appointed as the commandant of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and no sooner than he had been appointed, he was demonstrating that he meant business.

His business is the maintenance of the law and order, the protection of residents of and visitors to St. Kitts and Nevis and all sub-categories contained therein.

COP Walwyn accepted an invitation to speak at the St. Kitts Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce’s (CIC) Luncheon which was held on Tuesday (Sept. 13) at the Ocean Terrace Inn (OTI).

Casual yet impactful, Walwyn’s presentation reinforced his earlier utterances of zero tolerance for crime (petty and felonious) and a hands-on approach to battling the crime scourge which had visited St. Kitts Nevis over the past years.

Concerning the granting of “favours”, the Police Chief indicated that only during his first couple of days on the jobs, he was already being approached.

“I’ve had to disappoint three people already in the first two days and I know they are going to read this. People, I have been a cop 25 years. My wife is here and she can tell you; I made a promise to her and my (children), I am not wearing handcuffs for anybody! If I was going to be a dirty cop, it would have been in Houston because I had every opportunity.

“We had a man come into my office, wanted me to change some papers for him. People, I don’t do that. I don’t change anything, I go by the book. I do everything that the law said I’m supposed to do and if it’s not in the law, I m not doing it! So don’t try to talk to me in my office, trying to get any special favours, especially some of you in my family who tried that already…I’m letting you know don’t come up there thinking just because you are a Walwyn you will get a special favour…”

Regarding the course of action which should be taken by the favour-seekers, Commissioner Walwyn suggested, “You need to go down to the front desk and do like everybody else and apply and if I am not doing it for my family, the rest of you who are coming from Nevis on boats trying to get stuff done, the answer is no!”
