    PAM: “Re-registration process illegal”

    By Terresa McCall

Members of the PAM Executive body gathered outside the Electoral Office on Central Street, Tuesday morning
    Basseterre, St. Kitts:
The People’s Action Movement (PAM) has described the ongoing “re-registration period” as being nothing short of “illegal”, as no rules and regulations to govern the process have been issued.

Late last year, a press release, originating from the Office of the Prime Minister, informed the public that the process of “re-registration” was slated to begin on 27th December 2007 and would run through to 30th September, 2008.

Earlier today, approximately eight members of the PAM’s Executive Body went to the Electoral Office, located on Central Street, seeking a meeting with the Supervisor of Elections, Leroy Benjamin, to address a number of issues which they feel are pertinent to the “correct conducting” of the process.

SKNVibes.com caught wind of the happenings and when we arrived on scene, the executive members were in the Electoral Office. However, while they were in the office, an individual, an individual left with the intention to call the armed forces.

SKNVibes was on scene to see the executive members leave the office, shortly after which, a police officer arrived on scene.
We spoke with the Deputy Leader of the PAM, Shawn K. Richards, and he explained what transpired while they were in the Electoral Office and also what their aim was. ~~Adz:Right~~

“In terms of this morning, we went to the electoral office to seek a meeting with Supervisor of Elections, Mr. Benjamin, but he was not in office.  We spoke to Mr. Oliver Knight and tried to get some information as to the rules and orders governing the registration process.  He has not been able to provide us with such,” Richards noted.

Richards said the process is” illegal” as there has been no issuance of Statutory Rules and Orders (SR&O) to govern the process.
“One would expect that if one goes to register, you would expect that there would be certain rules and regulations governing the process and there isn’t any, therefore, the whole process has to be illegal.

The current process is illegal.  There are no rules and regulations governing the process.  No SR&O has been issued.  For example, if someone goes to register at this point in time and you want to object, under what rules do you object to the person?” Richards expressed.

SKNVibes.com made several attempts to contact Minister Nigel Carty, Junior Minister for Information and cabinet Spokesman on Electoral Reform, for a comment on the issue but efforts were futile as he was in a meeting.

Richards said that the PAM has not yet decided on its next course of action.
