Melford Henville Scholarship Foundation donates to St. James Primary

Ms. Melissa Henville (r) hands over gift to Chief Education Officer Mrs. Jennifer Hodge and Principal Ms. Vertelly Weeks
    CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (JANUARY 08, 2008)
-- Students and staff of the St. James Primary School in at Maddens Village received a welcome gift of a Dell Inspiron computer system, a printer and scanner when classes resumed earlier this week.

The gift came from the Melford Henville Scholarship Foundation an organisation which was conceptualised by the Henville family of Nevis, who reside in the United States of America, during a presentation by Ms. Melissa Henville at the school’s compound on Friday January 04, 2007.

Ms. Henville said her parents had always stressed the importance of education and her family wanted to give something back to Nevis.

“My dad [Melford Henville] always stressed the importance of education and how he always wanted the best for Nevis because he loved Nevis so much and of course my mom being a past teacher and Senior Education Officer was in complete agreement with him and she asked us to stress the importance of education.

“My brothers and I after our dad passed away were always thinking of how we could contribute to our community and back to our country and that’s when we started the Melford Henville Scholarship Foundation and we are presenting a computer and a printer to

St. James. We know that those who use it are going to use it well and grow academically and we just ask that if you have anymore concerns or questions don’t hesitate to get in touch with us,” she said.

Mrs. Jennifer Hodge, Chief Education Officer in the Ministry of Education on Nevis who was on hand for the presentation thanked the Henville family for their donation on behalf of the Ministry and Department of Education.

“Technology is where we are going and we certainly appreciate the thoughtfulness and thinking of the children here on Nevis. Education too is a top priority for us. Thank you so much,” she said.

School Principal Ms. Vertelly Weeks also thanked the family and the Foundation for its generous gift and explained that it would enhance the learning experience at the school.

“I can assure Mrs. Henville that these things will be put to good use and will enhance the learning at St. James Primary and the children would be able to do research. We just want to thank her for the additional software that she sent because that was not part of the package I had asked for, so we are indeed grateful because we got more than we expected. So please convey our heartiest thanks to the other members of the Foundation and wish them all a happy and prosperous New Year,” she said.
