ROADTOWN TortolaBVI, September 19th, 2011  – The Elections Office has published the preliminary list of persons who are eligible to vote in the upcoming General Election.

Supervisor of Elections Ms. Juliette Penn speaking to the Department of Information and Public Relations explained, “According to the amendments to the Elections Act 1994, the preliminary voters’ list has to be posted within four days after the dissolution of the House of Assembly to give voters the opportunity to inspect the list and ensure that they are registered.

She explained, “Anyone who is listed on the list may file a claim with the Elections Office if their name, address, or occupation has been wrongly stated or spelled. Additionally, registered voters may object to names on the list if they can prove that persons are not entitled to have his or her name listed.”

Section 19 (2) of the Elections Act 1994 as amended states, “Every person whose name appears in any such list may object to any other person whose name also appears therein as not being entitled to have his name therein, and shall within four days after the publication of such list, give notice as in Form No. 4 to the Supervisor of Elections, who may, where he deems necessary, inform the person objected to as in Form No. 5 and decide such claim according to the provisions of section 20.”

The last day for the submission of any claims or objections to the preliminary list is September 22. The Elections Office is located at No. 6 Russell Hill Road, in the Ulric Dawson Building and is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
