BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – Today, which marks the opening of the September 2011 Criminal Assizes, word spread that a small fire broke out at the Sir Lee L. Moore Judicial Complex which hosts the Basseterre High Court and Magistrates Court.

According to Chief Fire Officer, Hester Rawlins the fire officers responded immediately to the report received at about 7.05 a.m. (Sept.20)  and found smoke emanating from the evidence or exhibit room of the building.

“We were able to get the fire under control and the matter is under investigation,” he told SKNVibes.

Rawlins said that they are unable to tell at this point how the fire was started or who could have started it.

He also said it was not a big blaze but rather a small fire as it was classified as a ‘Class A’ fire.

A ‘Class A’ fire is one that is caused by material of wood, paper or cloth. It is not yet known whether the fire resulted from foul play or whether it was accidental.

It is also not known whether the fire will affect any of the cases to be held in the upcoming Assizes.

The opening of the September 2011 Criminal Assizes is taking place in Nevis today and commences with a ceremony at the Nevis High Court.
