Charlestown, Nevis: School principals and high ranking education officials from Nevis will discuss alternatives to corporal punishment, later this afternoon, on the heels of a presentation made by education consultant, Dr. Bronte Gonsalves.
The principals and education officials will meet for two days at the Mount Nevis Hotel, Nevis.
Nevis’ top Education Officer, Jennifer Hodge told reporters in an interview that the issue was controversial and it was important that a public debate ensues before corporal punishment is taken out of the Education Act.
“We are being proactive. We want to get input from the public so that we have different perspectives on the abolition of corporal punishment. Most parents do not want it abolished,” the Education Officer said.
The main objective of the two days of discussions is to examine the implications of discipline on school governance with the absence of corporal punishment and examine how test results can improve schools academic performance.
Additionally, the managing of school financing will be discussed. ~~Adz:Right~~
