ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, September 20th, 2011  – Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Honourable Omar W. Hodge said it was a joy to issue the land titles during the Anegada Lands Allocation Signing ceremony held at the Emile Dunlop Community Centre in Anegada.

The ceremony was held on Friday, September 16 and attended by Government officials, well-wishers and Anegada land title awardees.Addressing the crowd, of soon to be land holders, Minister Hodge said, “It is a joy for some of you but everyone in the end will have joy because we are not going to stop giving out land.”

The Minister acknowledged that it was a long process which encountered repeated trials but through cooperation and willingness from all involved, Government found a solution to move the Anegada lands allocation forward.
“It was a great thing to happen,” Honourable Hodge said acknowledging that, “land titles are not easy to come by.”

“Every single Anegadian should be able to get his or her parcel of land whether it is a house plot, or some piece of land somewhere to open a business to make money because Anegada is not going to remain the way it is all the time,” Hon. Hodge said.

The Minister added, “I can see the progress, and we are here to give out the land titles that we have. We are here to serve you and we will continue to work for the Anegadians.”

Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE said that it was a great day in Anegada as the land allocation ceremony is part of a bigger journey taken to arrive at that day. The Premier who is also the representative for 9th District said that he was glad to be present as Government continues the journey to award land titles.

“We realise that in order to get the kind of development that the Anegada people wanted, we had to make sure that we were doing the right thing. All the receivables today will realise that this is a big step forward and will take care of their documents and take care of their land,” Premier O’Neal said.

Mrs. Muriel Fahie, in her response on behalf of the land recipients thanked the Government, the Premier and the Natural Resources Minister for the land distribution which has made their dreams a reality. She said, “We now have an official title to the land and can use it as collateral to get a loan from the bank to build a house. Without that, many of us would not own our own home.”

Mr. Melvin Vanterpool, President of the Anegada Lands Development Advisory Committee in his remarks thanked all involved for making the land distribution a reality including, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour, the land recipients, the Anegada Lands Development Advisory committee, and its previous chairman, Mr. Darwin Potter.

Government through the Anegada Lands Allocation Signing Ceremony presented titles to approximately 40 individuals who met the eligibility criteria for land allocation in the ‘West End’ and ‘North Airport’ sub-divisions on Anegada.

This honoured a commitment made by the Government to the people of Anegada to streamline land distribution and foster development on the sister island.
