St. Kitts Entertainment Review (September 20, 2011)

Highlights from Friday night Home Grown Festival

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WHAT a tiring weekend it was for many with not one but two holidays and endless partying – a weekend that still has some people saying, “Wew! I need another weekend to sleep!”

As Friday was a National Holiday the events kicked off from Thursday night and it was to the Pumpkin the fans went with Real Men Promotions’, Independent Ladies Affair. As the bands began to set things in motion a number of females crowded to the front of the venue gyrating and carry on as if they were the bands’ ‘pom pom’ girls.

The DJs kept the music going in the hot smoke-filled dancehall room which rotated throughout the night between being packed and then empty.

A little scuffle broke out causing some patrons to scatter but in just a few moments it had broken up.
On Friday, few persons headed to the Frigate Bay Strip but a huge crowd gathered at Verchild’s Playfield for night one of the Home Grown Festival.

The night featured performances by artistes such as Minister LK, Rudii, Fresh Kutt, Hotta Lyrics, Sky Bal, Kash Man, Jah Fire and the sensational songbirds of the duo Dymanyzd.

All the artistes gave exceptionally good performances that had the crowd moving and singing along throughout the show. However, it was the Upstairs Family who kicked things into full motion. From the time the group stepped onstage with artistes like Footsy, Nicha B, Silk, Empress Levity and Pinocchio, and yelled their famous slang “Somebody say upstairs” the energy began to flow in the crowd.

Some villages away in Sandy Point, G-Spot, ‘de gals dem sweet spot’ was entertaining a decent sized crowd.  DJ Shaggy had pulled out some old school dancehall which everyone seemed to enjoy as they danced and sang along and beat on the walls of the venue.

Saturday, the Home Grown Festival crowd was a bit scarce but despite the low turnout on the second night, the show went on with some good performances from artistes like Daggah, Simburgers and Crucial Bankie amongst others. On both nights patrons benefitted from give-a-ways, compliments Digicel.

Also on Saturday, Club NV racked up a full house for the 2nd Annual Phenomenal Woman’s Independence all white party.

Though many people did not follow the theme many ladies went decked out and were bubbling and whining to selections of Sweet Sister Sensia before the Nu Vibes Band took over around 3:00 a.m.

The Strip was sparse on Saturday with only a few persons hanging around. On Sunday, however, a small crowd gathered at Ziggy’s Bar but the socialising was ended by police at 3:00 a.m.

The Pumpkin also had a small turnout on Sunday for a party dubbed ‘Counteraction’ and in Basseterre, the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College had a quite a party going on at Ma Pau. Although the attendance was not the best, patrons there seemed to be enjoying the night.

Meanwhile on Monday the events that were to be held as part of the East Basseterre Festival were cancelled thus bringing their long weekend to an early end.
