BVI’s chief of drugs wins regulatory award at annual convention

    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, September 20th, 2011  – Chief of Drugs and Pharmaceutical Services, Ms. Gracia Wheatley, captured the prestigious award for Excellence In Regulatory Affairs as she represented the Virgin Islands at the 2011 Caribbean Association of Pharmacists (CAP) annual convention in Antigua.

    Ms. Wheatley is a registered pharmacist employed by the Ministry of Health and Social Development. In her role as Chief of Drugs and Pharmaceutical Services, she is involved in the development of legislation to monitor the local pharmaceutical sector, and educational campaigns to sensitise the public on the correct use of medicines.

     

    Pharmacists nominated for the Excellence In Regulatory Affairs award are required to be registered with CAP, and to be employed with an agency responsible for regulating the pharmacy profession in their respective countries. Nominees were also required to have worked diligently to protect the pharmacy image and discipline, and to have served the wider public interest.

     

    Ms. Wheatley was also selected to serve as one of the moderators for the convention, and won the first place in the National Liaison Membership Drive and the National Liason Offficer Membership Drive Award with a 100% registration of local pharmacists with CAP. This is the first time the National Liason Offficer Membership Drive Award has been offered at the convention.

     

    The CAP annual convention is a forum which provides a range of continuing educational sessions to association members on growing trends and practices in the pharmaceutical field. The association is comprised of members from the Caribbean, the United States of America (U.S.A.) and Canada. The convention is hosted in a different Caribbean countries every year.

     

    This year’s convention was held on August 9 to August 14 with 18 countries represented including Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, the USA and Canada. Among other topics, educational sessions covered subjects such as Pharmaceutical Management of HIV related Opportunistic Infections Medication Adherence; Pharmacist’s Role in Patient Centric Approaches to the Management of Chronic Diseases; and Cancer-Pharmacotherapy - The Promise of Individualized Medicines.
    The next meeting, which is the CAP Executive Meeting and Leadership Summit, will be held in St. Kitts and Nevis on 25-27 November.
