Local licensed manicurist graduates as nail care educator

Ms Petra Newton
Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, September 21st 2011 - In an age where some women flaunt everything from fake hair to acrylic nails in order to appear ‘perfect’ or at the very least to conform to some loosely defined au courant social standard of beauty, it is refreshing to know that there are people still willing to keep it real by staying natural.

It is in the context of this cultural counter-revolution that we find Petra Newton, a national of St. Kitts, who despite working for almost two decades in the telecommunications industry, attended the Dudley Cosmetology University in North Carolina to become a licensed manicurist.

She recently graduated as an educator specializing in manicuring and finds that her greatest passion is teaching people how to care for two of the most utilized yet neglected parts of the anatomy - the hands and the feet. As Petra would say "it's not just about beauty, its about health”.

When giving consideration to the importance of how the average person is served by their extremities, it would be impossible not to note how the feet, bearing the body’s weight and functioning as a primary means of transport, take quite a lot of abuse on a daily basis.

Similarly, the hands are used to do everything from bathing bodies to handling steering wheels to typing at a computer, and are generally also overworked. It is no surprise therefore, that the outermost edges of these body parts (the nails) routinely experience trauma of varying types and degrees - hence the drying, splitting, breakage and even fungal infections that afflict many.

It is perhaps for this reason that some persons resort to using artificial accessories to enhance their appendages, but as Petra will tell you, with the proper care for the natural finger and toe nails, one can achieve the nail health, length and strength of their dreams - and can decorate them to their delight.

In due course, Petra hopes to have a school of beauty established on St. Kitts-Nevis to teach all of the aspects of adequate nail care to those interested in knowing how to give efficient service. Key to this endeavour will be the implementation of international industry standards and the provision of certification - with a view to having the nail care qualifications conferred through this facility, being able to be utilized both locally and abroad.

Congratulations to Petra for her accomplishments as an educator and her work as a natural nail care pioneer.
