~~Adz:Left~~ Basseterre, St. Kitts: In 2007, a total of eight individuals lost their lives as a result of traffic accidents and since the start of the year, two persons have already lost their lives via similar circumstances.   This, as expressed by many, is “ten lives too many” and is indicative of the need for road users to exercise a great deal more caution when utilizing the nation’s road system.

Statistics have shown that most traffic accidents occur because of human error.  Police officer with responsibility for the Police Force’s Press and Public Relations Office, Inspector Cromwell Henry, in speaking with SKNVibes explained that there are a few simple yet important guidelines which, if followed, can drastically reduce the risk of such incidents occurring.

    (1) Drive within the speed limit.  Speed limits are there for a reason and should be obeyed.  If someone is speeding, it is far more difficult for them to stop than if they were driving within the speed limit.

    (2) Even though you are driving within the speed limit, you should always observe road conditions and be cognizant of what they are.

    (3) Never drink and drive.  Alcohol can seriously impair judgment especially if consumed in large quantities.  It is advised that persons not drink and drive.  If you are going out, try and have a friend as a designated driver.

    (4) Always wear your seat belt.  Seat belts have saved many lives and will continue to do so if used properly.

    (5) Always be aware of what other road users are doing and try to anticipate what they are likely to do.  This ensures that you are steps ahead in the event that something happens- you would be able to react speedily.

Henry said that these tips should not be disregarded simply because they are being repeated.  He further noted that they are being repeated because they do help in saving lives.
