                            Federation to be updated on confirmation process of registered voters

    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JANUARY 15TH 2008 (CUOPM)
    – St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas is holding a Press Conference Tuesday afternoon to update the general public on the on-going confirmation process of registered voters.
     
    Minister of State for Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty said the Cabinet on Monday reviewed the progress made in the electoral reform process and was specifically updated on the progress with the confirmation of registered voters.
     
    He said Cabinet was also updated on a preliminary plan to decentralise the confirmation of voters from Basseterre and Charlestown to other parts of St. Kitts and Nevis.
     
    “This plan is geared towards ensuring that every previously registered voter, regardless of age or state of health, has an equal is opportunity to confirm his or her registration to continue to be able to vote in our democratic elections,” said Minister Carty in the post Cabinet briefing.
     
    He also disclosed that the amendments to the Elections Registration Regulations were discussed and Cabinet urged the Hon. Prime Minister and Minister responsible for Elections matters to hold a press conference on Tuesday January 15 to update the public on these and related matters. The Prime Minister press conference is to be held at the Parliamentary Lounge, Government Headquarters at three ‘o’ clock this afternoon.   ~~Adz:Right~~
     
    The National Assembly Elections (Amendment) Act, 2007 which was passed in the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly on December 7th 2007, was assented to by His Excellency the Governor General, Dr. Sir Cuthbert Sebastian on December 19th 2007.
     
    On December 26th 2007, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas exercising the powers granted him under section 107 (1) of the National Assembly Elections Act, Cap. 162 appointed the period December 27th 2007 to September 30th 2008 as the designated period during which all persons registered as voters for a constituency to confirm their registration and be issued with a National Identification Card in the manner prescribed.
